Safety and Benefits of Acupuncture
· If performed by a properly trained acupuncturist, acupuncture is a very safe procedure.
· Acupuncture often works when all other modalities have failed.
· Acupuncture works well when used concurrently with other treatments/modalities.
· Acupuncture helps patients for whom pain medications are not appropriate or do not work.
· Acupuncture is the best treatment for all types of pain.
What to expect
· After a brief evaluation and assessment, the patient is usually asked to lie down to maximize comfort and effectiveness of the treatment.
· The acupuncture needles are sterile, disposable, single use needles. Most people are surprised that the needles have little to no sensation when inserted. It is common to feel treatment sensations after the needle is inserted, which include tingling at the needle site or all over the body, a dull ache at the needle site, or an electric sensation at the needle site or traveling through the body.
· The needles are often retained up to 30 minutes to maximize the effect.
· It may take several treatments to clear a condition. The number of treatments needed depends on the severity of the condition and the health of the patient.
Is acupuncture energy medicine?
Acupuncture is physical medicine. Stimulating the points and areas with acupuncture needles activates the body’s nerves to quickly respond. Motor nerves, sensory nerves, and proprioceptors are activated to reduce symptoms and help the body to heal itself.
